I recently had my transmission replaced on my LX470. I noticed that some of the bolts on the companion flange leaving the transfer case were stripped out when I was replacing the u-joints on the propeller shaft. Can I replace the press bolts on the companion flange with regular hex bolts like on the rear flange going into the rear diff from the drive shaft? If so, does anyone have any recommendations? Is there any reason I wouldn't want to do this?

I believe you have to remove the rear half of transfer case and pull the flange + half shaft of center diff out to access the flange bolts.

See the thread I did on replacing the oil seal the rear output shaft. Last edited: Mar 31,

I can't see any reason you wouldn't want to, unless there isn't clearance for the nut or bolt head on the Tcase side.

1- take it back to who did the trans work and have them fix it
2-regular bolts are not good, driveshaft bolts have a longer shoulder to go thru the sheer plane
3-you would most likely need to drill the holes bigger to get the bolts thru the hole

Its hard to remove the studs without angle grindering then but you can use bolts all the same.

No, I would not use standard bolts. Driveshaft fasteners are generally very specifically designed and are not similar to other common bolts. The shoulder is enlarged, the diameter of the shank/shaft in the bolt is precisely matched to the flange, etc...

Like someone else said, take it back and let that shop sort it out, correctly, with new pressed-in bolts.
