Understanding Oil Seals for Your Specific Needs

Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR, nitrile)

NBR, commonly referred to as nitrile rubber, is widely recognized as the ideal material for oil seals due to its excellent resistance to various oils and greases, including mineral grease and hydraulic oil. However, certain synthetic oils and greases, particularly those containing glycol, may compromise NBR rubber materials. When dealing with glycol, a PTFE lip seal is often recommended. Furthermore, NBR is not resistant to acids and solvents. This rubber type performs well for oil and grease applications within the temperature range of -35 °C to 100 °C.

Many ERIKS oil seals, including models M, MST, R, and RST, are predominantly composed of NBR.

Fluorine Rubber (FKM, Viton®)

FKM, also known as FPM or under the brand name Viton®, is capable of withstanding higher liquid temperatures, reaching up to 180 °C. FKM exhibits remarkable resistance to strong acids and bases as well as synthetic oils and greases. However, like NBR, glycol-based oils and greases may harm FKM too.

Due to its elevated temperature tolerance, FKM is optimal for situations where speeds are higher, significantly increasing the temperature at the seal lip. Generally, using FKM contributes to increased longevity compared to NBR, offsetting its higher cost; FKM's durability means less frequent replacements. It's worth noting that the low-temperature performance of standard FKM is limited to -15 °C.

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE, Teflon®)

PTFE, known by the brand name Teflon®, is less frequently selected as a material for oil seals but is favored for specific rotating seals used in the chemical, food, and pharmaceutical sectors. This material is distinguished by its exceptionally low frictional resistance and superior chemical resistance. PTFE is capable of enduring a wide temperature range, from -80 °C to 200 °C, making it ideal for seals in demanding applications. Note that the shafts designed for PTFE oil seals require a harder and finer finish, and an axle sleeve is often employed to satisfy this requirement.

EPDM

EPDM oil seals are not as commonly utilized. Their main applications include resistance to solvents, hot water, and steam. EPDM is robust against low temperatures down to -50 °C and UV radiation. Certain varieties of EPDM can withstand higher temperatures, reaching +150 °C, and these seals are primarily available upon request.

VMQ (silicone)

VMQ, commonly referred to as silicone, is occasionally employed for oil seals, though its usage is limited due to its lower mechanical strength and inadequate wear resistance. Consequently, this material is not ideal for dynamic applications. However, VMQ can endure an impressive temperature range of -60 °C to 200 °C.
