Dumb Fuel Filter Question OM617 - Peach Parts

I'm assuming I want to pour this unfiltered diesel from a gas can into the pre filtering part of the canister and not just over the whole canister. In my opinion, all this "filter filling" is much ado about nothing. The primer pump isn't there to serve as a decoration. Use it.

Same with "gasket oiling." The filter doesn't need to rotate, so why should it need lubrication?

The stock or normal replacement filters all do a more than adequate job for this application. Don't see a need for the additional expense of the K&N. There doesn't appear to be any empirical data indicating stock filters are not performing. Located as indicated by another posting, mounted to the frame rail on driver side approximately between the doors. Fairly easy to change, messy though. Smelled like gas all day. Next time I'll wear throw away rubber gloves. Replacement filter was a Fram, approximately $13. Took about 20 minutes. Started right up, ran perfectly. Good luck. (Unless you're in an area with known "contaminated" gas supplies, I think every 30k is about right.)

Continuing the fuel filter thread. . .

Well, I changed out my fuel filter for the first time at 30k. Actually, first time in my existence I ever attempted such a feat, and it actually went pretty good! If I can manage to change that thing, anybody can!

A few tips, whoever suggested tying a rag around your arm. . .awesome idea. Goggles are also a good thing to wear.

As a side note. . . I was amazed at all of the dirt and junk that came out of the inflow end of the filter. . .jeeeze. . .that thing really works!

So. . .my question. . . I went to the local Pep Boys and bought my $12 fuel filter. They only had one brand in stock. . Purolator. In back of the Purolator box it stated change every 10k. Well, I did want to buy AC Delco, but I went with what they had. Now I am wondering, how standardized are these things? Should I change it at 40k? Should I change it at 60k as stated by the manual? Should I compromise and split the difference and change it at 50k? Is the Purolator filter total crap?

Thanks!

brirun95-
I have no informed answers to your questions, but the more often you change that filter, the more money the filter manufacturers will make. If I was manufacturing filters, I'd tell you to change it often, too. In summary, I'm betting every 30k like the book says is just fine. This is, of course, just my ramblings... 11H would be the guy I'd ask. N

I change my AIR and FUEL filters every fourth oil change (12,000 mi) more often if conditions are dusty. Clean fuel and air mean clean injectors. As it was explained to me by a fuel injection mechanic - injector degradation is like hearing loss - by the time you notice it's too late...

I won't buy a Fram filter for any place on my AV after seeing comparisons of oil filters and in person seeing a Fram cut away compared to a NAPA - man those things are JUNK - so I won't put anything Fram on my truck - I used to until I saw the light

OH on this subject - fuel filter isn't hard to change - I just put my 2nd one on at 50K miles.

Alright, I am sure there is a topic for this somewhere, but I have searched for 15 mins and found nothing.

SOOO, has anyone replaced their fuel filter yet? Any directions for this, and things to look out for? I am getting a slight hesitation when accelerating from a stop and thought the fuel filter would be a good place to start. Any thoughts are welcome!!

Thanks,

There is a thread on this..
But your problem is 'working as designed' and the fix is Taylor Thundervolts TV50 plug wires.
There's several threads on that, too.

Thanks Tree_Hugger.

I am expecting my Taylors this afternoon, so I will put them on first and see how they improve the issue. But at some point the Fuel Filter will need to be replaced, just thought I would educate myself on how to do it now...

Guys,

I just got my fuel filter change at 22k miles and I can honestly say, what a difference it made. I'm guessing my filter was a little dirty. The truck idles smoother and is more responsive. Or maybe it is just me.

Paid the servicemen 52.00 to do the change while i had it in for squeeky front end and leaky rear diffy, also the broken flap behind the midgate.

Flap - fixed like new again!

Squeek - ordered some new bushings

rear diffy leak - some seal was leaking and had that changed out too.

Thanks a million!

The fuel filter is a Purolator F (The Universal GM FI Fuel filter - it fits everything)

On the drivers side of the AV on the frame rail, approximately and the front of the drivers door, is a silver canister looking thing screwed in at both ends with fuel line fittings.

Depressureize the fuel system at the schreder valve on the drivers side of the engine just below the engine cover. and unscrew the fuel cap.

You will need a can of wd 40, a flat head screwdriver and 12 and 14 mm open end wrenches. be sure to have something to catch the gas that WILL come out of the filter.

NO SMOKING!!!

Indo the clamp that holds the filter in place

Undo the fillings with the two wrenches

slide the filter out

Reverse the procedure.

put the gas cap on.

To repressureize the fuel system Turn the key to on, give the gas about a 1/4 to 1/2 pedal and turn the key. it will protest but will start.

Hope this helps. I just did this at 15K about 2 months ago. If anyone catches anything I missed, Please post here!!!

I spoke with a mechanic the other day and he highly recommended that I change my fuel filter regularly. He said its cheaper (I've changed them on other cars easily enough), than changing the fuel pump.

I have not even looked at how my system is set up. Guess I need to crawl under there and look at it. I'm wondering if the filter filters the gas before the pump or after? On my Ford, the filter is after the in-tank pump. It would not make sense to change the filter to preserve the pump if the filter is after the pump right? I have a lot of faith in this mechanic and know that he does not pull stuff out of his &$$, but wonder if someone else can confirm the pump/filter set up on our vehicles.

Thanks!

I've got an 02 5.3L and the fuel filter is on the frame rail below the drivers side seat. After you remove the fittings from both ends, slide the filter out of the plastic loop holder---removing the two bolts holding the loop holder doesn't get you anywhere as the loop holder is also clipped to the stainless steel brake lines.

The pump is in the fuel tank. The filter is inline on the frame rail. I think it is pretty much underneath the driver's seat.

I had my filter changed out. I figured it is a relatively cheap thing to do to prevent some potentially very expensive problems.

Also from my understanding the fuel filter is in the tank....another thread on this too

Does anyone know where the fuel filter is located on a AV? My owners manual does not give any information about it. My son-in-law has a AV and his owners manual gives the location.

I just changed the fuel filter, for the 2nd time, on the 02 AV @ 60,000 mi.  The filter on the 02 and 03 are located on the inside of the frame rail, under the the drivers seat area.
