Modular conveyors are specifically designed with hygiene considerations in mind and are typically constructed from Stainless Steel Grade 304. Also referred to as radius belts, these flat belt conveyors consist of individual plastic or steel modules that are usually connected by joint rods. They represent a balance between conventional belt and chain conveyors.
The design features of these belts allow for several conveying methods: inclined, horizontal, corkscrew, and circular paths, which makes them suitable for confined areas. They can also absorb lateral forces, facilitating diagonal product movement.
Given the hygiene requirements in the food industry, the materials used for conveyor belts must be approved by MHRA. This ensures that no contamination occurs during the processing and manufacturing of food products. The primary plastics utilized in the production of modular belts for food transportation include Polyethylene and Polypropylene. Additionally, Nylon can be employed due to its high impact strength and excellent chemical resistance; Nylon is also MHRA approved and works effectively across various temperature ranges.
Polypropylene is suitable for belts exposed to extremely high temperatures, reaching up to 100 degrees Celsius. Its rigidity allows for strong pulling force, making it capable of conveying heavier loads while propelling the belt forward. Furthermore, Polypropylene is chemically resistant, which simplifies maintenance and cleaning procedures.
Belt materials made from Polyethylene perform well in cold conditions, exhibiting high pulling strength, impact resistance, and operational capabilities in environments as low as -75 degrees Celsius. Polyethylene is known for its longevity, often exceeding that of alternative materials.
