A sewer valve is unique and designed differently than any other type of water valve or gate valve. A valve used to prevent ‘backwater’ (waste water) from entering into a building from the public sewer system is exposed to corrosive water, waste, grit, and other solids. For that reason this type of valve does not use a typical ‘seated gate’ – a ‘knife edge gate’ is employed. A knife edged gate is specifically designed for controlling the flow of a wide variety of materials, such as found in pulp plant, paper plants, mining, and waste water treatment plants who’s flow contains solid materials. Unlike for instance a valve meant for drinking water.

While a sewer check valve is more widely used than a knife edged type, this type has advantages. Unlike a check valve, which greatly reduces backwater but does not eliminate it, a knife edged valve completely 100% stops backwater from passing through it. When a property owner knows in advance when a public or city sewer system may surcharge the valve can be closed to completely prevent damage and contamination from waste water.
Any handyman or unlicensed plumber can claim they can install a valve on a sewer line. Unfortunately the ramifications of unlicensed work goes well beyond the fact that it is not legal. Installing the incorrect valve on a house drain, or installing it in the wrong location, will have no positive affect or result. As a matter of fact installing a sewer backflow prevention device in the wrong location can hep to cause the plugs from a house trap to blow off. The result would be a flood of raw sewage into the building from the public sewer system. After sewage enters a building removing the threat of E Coli and mold will far exceed the cost of the correct backflow installation in the first place.
Balkan is expert in installing both sewer gate valves and sewer check valves. By carefully investigating different types of valves and their applications Balkan has the right product for whatever your situation calls for. By providing free site visits, and no-obligation written estimates, guesswork and vague answers are never a part of a Balkan customers experience. Balkan is professional at all times and devoted to superior customer service. If a backwater device is not the correct answer for your sewer situation an experienced representative will let you know that. Balkan will never process unnecessary or needless work orders.
Because the typical house drain in NYC is located under a finished basement floor some concrete area must be disturbed. It is usually recommended that while the area is open and exposed that the house trap is changed at the same time. A new trap ensures plumbing is water tight and with tight fitting covers. In many cases it is advisable to upgrade the sewer access pit from an unsafe and unsightly open concrete pit to a pre-fabricated access pit with a fitted and anti-slip cover. Adding these items to the scope of work adds very little to the cost and does not delay completion of the installation in any way. They offer an added degree of reliability and may prevent a trip and fall from an open or unsafe sewer access pit.
Once a property owner decides to address issues of sewer backwater it should be done correctly, permanently, legally, and address the issue once and for all.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Soft Seal Gate Valve. The gate valve is a gate that opens and closes. The movement direction of the gate is perpendicular to the direction of the fluid. The gate valve can only be fully opened and fully closed, and cannot be adjusted or throttled. The gate valve is sealed through the contact between the valve seat and the gate plate. Usually, the sealing surface is surfaced with metal materials to increase wear resistance, such as 1Cr13, STL6, stainless steel, etc. Gates include rigid gates and elastic gates. According to the different gates, gate valves are divided into rigid gate valves and elastic gate valves.
When the gate valve is closed, the sealing surface can be sealed only by the medium pressure, that is, the sealing surface of the gate plate is pressed to the valve seat on the other side by the medium pressure only to ensure the sealing of the sealing surface. This is self-sealing. Most gate valves adopt forced sealing, that is, when the valve is closed, external force must be relied on to force the gate plate to the valve seat to ensure the sealing performance of the sealing surface.
The gate plate of the gate valve moves linearly with the valve stem. It is a rising stem gate valve.
Usually, there is a trapezoidal thread on the lift rod. Through the nut on the top of the valve and the guide groove on the valve body, the rotating motion is changed into linear motion, that is, the operating torque is changed into the operating thrust. When the valve is opened when the lift height of the gate plate is equal to 1:1 times the valve diameter, the fluid channel is completely unobstructed, but during operation, this position cannot be monitored.
The top of the valve stem is used as a mark, that is, the position that does not open, as it is a fully open position. To consider the locking phenomenon due to temperature changes, the valve is usually opened to the top position and then retracted 1/2-1 turn as the fully open valve position.
Therefore, the fully open position of the valve is determined by the position of the gate plate (i.e. stroke). Some gate valve stem nuts are set on the gate plate, and the rotation of the handwheel drives the valve stem to rotate, thereby lifting the gate plate. This kind of valve is called a Rotating rod gate valve or hidden rod gate valve.
The body is made of high-grade ductile iron, which is about 20% to 30% lighter than traditional gate valves and is easy to install and maintain.
Traditional gate valves often have foreign objects such as stones, wood blocks, cement, iron filings, debris, etc. accumulated in the groove at the bottom of the valve after the pipe is washed with water, which can easily cause leakage due to the inability to close tightly. The elastic seat seals the bottom of the gate valve. It adopts the same flat bottom design as the water pipe machine. That is not easy to cause debris accumulation and allows the fluid to flow smoothly.
The gate is made of high-quality rubber for the entire inner and outer cover. European rubber vulcanization technology enables the vulcanized gate to ensure precise geometric dimensions. The rubber and ductile cast gate is firmly connected, does not easily fall off, and has good elastic memory.
The valve body is precision cast, and its precise geometric dimensions ensure the sealing of the valve without any finishing work inside.
