The classic 0.1" pitch IDC connectors for .050" pitch ribbon cable (and the like…) are classified under Rectangular Connectors, Free Hanging and Panel Mount..

They don’t really float to the top of the default result order for the family, but emerge quickly if one takes the time to specify a few key parameters, e.g. pitch, number of rows, etc.
The notion of an “intuitive” presentation is unfortunately quite subjective.
The goal of the product taxonomy is to group items having similar functions, features, and dimensions of variability, in order to facilitate the presentation of those defining characteristics in a normalized parametric fashion.
Though this does result in something of a learning curve and a requirement for mental engagement on the users’ part, it is a superior paradigm for design and engineering purposes.
The DigiKey “search” function is best understood as a text-based filtering tool. The general idea is that it returns all product listings for which all of the supplied (space-separated) search terms appear somewhere in the indexed data for a given part.
Put differently, the idea is that it returns all that it is asked for and nothing else; the user is in charge and does the thinking, while the “search” function quietly obeys. Folks shopping for consumer goods may prefer to trade control for convenience, but most serious designers/engineers are quite insistent on using their tools, rather than being used by them.
I suppose I was a bit incorrect in my expectation that if I entered the “IDC cable” together as a search term The search results would respond with something more focused than a list of items that have either one or both terms somewhere in their descriptions?
So it seems that I would get the same results if entering a search with IDC and another search with cable separately?
Is there a way to search where both terms are used as a statement together? Like entering the search term in quotes or parentheses i.e. “IDC cable” or “IDC cable connector”
It was very frustrating and I’m not new to this, I’ve been using DigiKey for parts for over 30 years.
When I entered “IDC cable connector” into the search or various versions of those terms I NEVER saw a response that got me into a group of items that resembled what I was looking for. In some cases, the result were some parts groups with a quantity of 2 items that met those criteria, but never saw anything resembling what I was looking for. After about an hour of searching, I eventually had to resort to entering a part number that I had for a similar connector just to get me into the ballpark and poke around from there.
There’s got to be a better way.
I found I had much better results and found things quicker using the paper catalog because the items with similar functions were grouped together on neighboring pages and if I didn’t have an exact description using terminology in the text, I could quickly see what was available and adjust my design requirements by scanning the pages for pictures and descriptions listed.
Maybe that’s just me… But I don’t think so.
Thanks for the responses.

QUICKON fast connection technology features a space-saving rotary connection with patented insulation displacement contact. Simply insert the untreated conductor into the clamping chamber and swivel the orange actuating element. This swivel cuts the cable and contacts the conductor.
It is used to connect conductors quickly and without any pretreatment. Insulation displacement connection is suitable for cables with PVC and PE insulation. Other types of insulation are available on request.
Save time with the insulation displacement connection, because the conductor does not need to be prepared for connection.
Our portfolio includes PCB terminal blocks and PCB connectors with an actuating element (in a contrasting color) up to 1.5 mm² connection cross-section and PCB terminal blocks with finger-operable connection for data lines up to 0.34 mm².
M12 connectors with QUICKON insulation displacement connection provide the fastest connection for connectors designed for assembly. The connectors are equipped with an insulation displacement contact. With this connection method, untreated rigid or flexible conductors including insulation are positioned in the connector. When the compression nut on the connector is tightened, the contact displaces the conductor insulation and makes a spring-forced, vibration-resistant, and gas-tight contact with the conductor.
Industrial power distribution does not have to be time-consuming or complicated. The QPD installation system for capacities up to 690 V/40 A is proof of this. With the proven QUICKON IDC displacement connection, cables up to 5 x 6.0 mm² can be connected quickly and easily, without stripping or special tools.
The connection is designed for applications in which round and AS-Interface cables are to be connected efficiently on site. The connection can be disconnected at any time, and the components can be reused. Fast-connection technology automatically provides contact and strain relief when tightened. The quick and easy handling of the QUICKON fast connection means that connection time can be reduced by up to 80%.
RJ45 connectors with insulation displacement connection (IDC) technology can be assembled easily and safely in the field without special tools. The industrial-grade connectors are suitable for Ethernet and PROFINET applications. They are available for cable sizes from 26 to 23 AWG and for data rates up to 10 Gbps.
Contact inserts with insulation displacement connection for heavy connectors reduce connection time by up to 60%. The QUICKON connection is equipped with an IDC insulation displacement contact. With this connection method, an unprepared wire with insulation is positioned in front of the gap of the insulation displacement contact and then pushed into the blade gap by means of insulation displacement. In so doing, the wire insulation is severed and gas-tight contact is established between the wire and the contact. The connection force is independent of the user and completely reliable, provided the permissible conductor cross sections and connection conditions are observed.
