Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (HPMC) serves multiple functions, including lubricant, foam enhancer, stabilizer, thickener, emulsion stabilizer, and film former for hair and skin care products. HPMC is particularly beneficial in surfactant systems due to its foam-enhancing properties, which facilitate the formation of bubble structures, resulting in richer and longer-lasting lather. Moreover, HPMC exhibits high tolerance for salt and alcohol.

Techniques for Dispersion

  • The preferred method is to begin by heating approximately one-third of the total formulation water to 167°F (75°C) or higher. Add the HPMC to the vortex of agitated and heated water and mix until fully dispersed. HPMC will not dissolve at this temperature. Upon complete dispersion, add the remaining water at room temperature or colder and continue mixing for 30 minutes after the total solution has cooled to 77°F (25°C) or less. Then, proceed with the formulation.
  • If heating is not an option, it is advisable to create a slurry of HPMC in a non-solvating medium such as glycerin or PEG, then add the slurry to the vortex of vigorously agitated water. Directly adding HPMC to cold water is not recommended; however, if necessary, it must be done very slowly under vigorous agitation. Be prepared for longer mixing times to achieve complete dissolution.
