Do you operate a building such as a GP surgery, veterinary clinic, dental practice or food business that requires high standards of cleanliness at all times? Or do you simply have lots of messy users of your furniture, who you often need to wipe-up after? Then it&#;s essential that the furniture in your waiting room or waiting areas is as hygienic as possible. Keep reading, and the Rosehill team will show you the very best wipe clean waiting room furniture for your premises&#;

What is wipe clean waiting room furniture?

Is wipe clean waiting room furniture different from regular waiting room furniture? Our answer is a massive YES!

There is a distinct difference between items of furniture which have been expressly designed to be wipe clean and hygienic, versus items of furniture which have not.

To put this into context, consider the following example. A luxury hotel lobby will typically be furnished with chairs that are upholstered with a rich, plush fabric. These chairs are expected to provide comfort and style &#; and not be subject to dirt, spills and other incidents. They aren&#;t what you&#;d class as &#;wipe clean&#; furniture, but that&#;s because they aren&#;t expressly designed for that purpose.

Now, we&#;re not saying regular items of furniture are dirty. We&#;re simply emphasising the point that it&#;s possible to buy items of furniture which have been &#;enhanced&#; to be as hygienic and cleanable as possible.

It&#;s those types of furniture that you&#;ll want to buy for your waiting room or waiting areas.

What types of wipe clean waiting room furniture are there?

Given the importance many organisations place on hygiene in their buildings, there has been an explosion in new items of wipe clean furniture coming to market in recent years.

As such, it&#;s possible to buy a wide range of items that can be called &#;wipe clean furniture&#;. The types of wipe clean furniture you can buy include:

  • Individual chairs (both upholstered and plastic).

  • Bench and beam seating.

  • Coffee tables.

  • Modular seating systems.

  • Sofas.

What to look for in wipe clean waiting room furniture

Okay, so what properties or characteristics should you look for in an item of wipe clean waiting room furniture?

To help you make the right selection for your building, the Rosehill team has set out their key characteristics to look for in hygienic, wipe clean furniture below.

Cleanable surfaces

Whether you select a chair, a table, a sofa or bench for your waiting room, the most important characteristic to look for is that it has cleanable surfaces.

At this point, we need to pause.

Why? Because there&#;s a bit of an urban myth that we need to dispel.

As soon as most people see the words &#;cleanable surfaces&#;, their minds immediately turn to images of vinyl or plastic surfaces.

And, yes, those are certainly surfaces that can be easily cleaned &#; but it&#;s also possible to buy items of furniture that are upholstered in fabric, that are cleanable in the same way as vinyl or plastic surfaces.

That&#;s thanks to a nifty invention called &#;treated fabrics&#;.

As their name suggests, treated fabrics are treated with special chemicals to make them highly-resistant to the most common types of staining (e.g. food, drink, bodily fluids). Many are non-permeable with a waterproof backing, so liquids don&#;t soak through them.

Not only are treated fabrics highly resistant to staining, but they can be cleaned in the same way you would clean a plastic surface. Some of these treated fabrics can even be cleaned with a bleach solution. However, you should always refer to the manufacturer&#;s instructions before applying any kind of cleaning agent to a fabric or vinyl.

So, in short &#; look for items of furniture that can be easily cleaned &#; but don&#;t think you&#;re restricted to items that are plastic or upholstered in vinyl alone.

Antimicrobial

Should infection control be a particularly important concern (e.g. you run a GP surgery or veterinary clinic), then you should choose items of furniture which have antimicrobial properties.

Furniture which has antimicrobial properties will generally have been treated with an active ingredient that prevents microbial growth.

In fact, not only can furniture with antimicrobial properties prevent microbial growth, but other problematic things such as fungi and micro creatures like dust mites.

At this point, we have to reinforce the point we made earlier. There&#;s a common misconception that only plastic or vinyl upholstered furniture can have antimicrobial properties. It&#;s actually possible to buy furniture which is upholstered in fabric which has antimicrobial properties. The key is to choose a treated fabric which is explicitly labelled as being antimicrobial.

Here are some great examples of antimicrobial fabrics and vinyls:

  • Highland Fabric

&#; as a high-grade waterproof fabric that is treated to be inherently antimicrobial and antifungal, it&#;s the perfect choice for upholstering chairs in your waiting room.

  • Cadet Vinyl

&#; if you&#;d prefer your waiting room chairs to be upholstered in vinyl, then select the Cadet Vinyl. This is one of our best-selling antimicrobial vinyls and our most popular option for medical clinics and practices.

Request a swatch &#; if you&#;d like to see what some of these fabrics and vinyls are like in real life, you can request a swatch.

Hygiene gaps

Another important thing to look for &#; especially when you&#;re selecting chairs &#; is the presence of hygiene gaps.

A hygiene gap is generally located between the rear of the seat of the chair and the bottom of the back pad. Having a gap here prevents the build up of a &#;bacterial pocket&#; of dirt, dust and other detritus that typically collects on chairs that don&#;t have a hygiene gap.

Aside from this, hygiene gaps also just make it much easier to clean chairs and maintain a strong infection control regime.

Note &#; it&#;s possible to buy other types of furniture such as sofas and bench and beam seating with hygiene gaps.

Durable

Waiting rooms typically see a high footfall, with tens &#; maybe even hundreds &#; of people passing through them each day.

As such, the chairs, tables and other items of furniture that you choose for your waiting room will need to withstand high levels of wear and tear.

Because of this, you should ensure that any furniture you select is of contract quality. This means that the furniture has been designed and manufactured to withstand heavy use by the public every day. You&#;ll find that contract furniture also features more robust materials and upholstery than your average piece of domestic furniture.

Note &#; all the waiting room furniture that we sell here at Rosehill is of contract quality.

Context

Another important point to consider when selecting wipe clean furniture, is the type of spills the furniture will face and how aggressively they may need to be cleaned.

For example, if you&#;re buying furniture for a late-night catering environment, then the furniture will probably just need a basic wipe down at the end of the night. As such, beam seating with bucket poly seats will probably be the best option.

In contrast, if you&#;re buying furniture for a hospital waiting room, then it will be subjected to much more rigorous cleaning regimes. As such, individual chairs upholstered in healthcare-specific vinyls or fabrics will be the best choice.

Low maintenance

As waiting rooms tend to be very busy, heavily used spaces, you should select items of furniture that are low maintenance.

The best way to do this is to choose items that have as few moving parts as possible. That&#;s because moving parts tend to be parts that break and require maintenance.

So, consider choosing items such as one piece plastic chairs (with upholstered seats and backs for added comfort) and coffee tables with robust tubular steel frames and solid laminate table tops.

Other low maintenance options include bench and beam seating, which feature sturdy metal frames and low-maintenance plastic seats and backs.

Indoor Advantage rated

If you&#;re selecting items of furniture for your waiting room that include plastic parts or components, then you may wish to pick items which are &#;Indoor Advantage&#; rated.

Items which are Indoor Advantage rated have been tested to ensure they emit only very low amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Volatile organic compounds are chemicals such as acetone and formaldehyde which are emitted from plastic products. Over time, these VOCs can affect the air quality in indoor spaces.

So, if this is a particular concern, be sure to select items of furniture which are Indoor Advantage rated.

Waiting Chair: Should you get one for your office?

If you&#;re thinking about purchasing a waiting chair for your office, you may be wondering if it&#;s really worth the investment. In this blog post, we&#;ll discuss some of the benefits of having a waiting chair in your office and help you decide if it&#;s the right purchase for you.

When it comes to office seating, there are a lot of options to choose from. But should you get a waiting chair for your office?

Some factors to consider include how many people will be using the waiting area and how much space you have available.

It can be tough to find the right furniture to make sure you&#;re productive and comfortable. One piece of furniture that&#;s often overlooked is a waiting chair. A waiting chair can provide comfort and some extra storage space for your office. Here are a few reasons why you might want to consider purchasing a waiting chair for your home office. Having a designated spot for visitors to wait can make their experience much more pleasant and can help to keep your work area organized.

Consider the following benefits of having a waiting chair in your office:

1) It shows that you care about your customers and want them to be comfortable while they wait.

2) The receptionist&#;s chair might be the most important sales tool you have. The proper seating arrangement at the beginning is essential to making the whole visit memorable and getting it right. Every visitor that walks through the door or waits in the reception area is both the first and last point of contact with your firm. The way that each person dealing with your company perceives you will influence how well they work together to serve your clients. The first impression of the firm is created by the receptionist. Invariably, it is how they are treated at this point which forms their initial impressions of your company.

3) It shows that you are confident in regards to your business and services because&#;

There&#;s never a good time for an unexpected guest to drop in for a chat. However, if you have one or two seats available for visitors then it lessens the potential disruption caused by these unscheduled visits.

4) It can help to keep your office organized and tidy by providing an extra place for people to sit.

5) It can make your office look more professional and polished.

6) It can be used as an extra seat during meetings or presentations.

7) &#;and last but not least important &#; it saves money!

Even if your office has no other chairs than those in front of each worker&#;s desk, there should be at least one seat reserved exclusively for unannounced guests who need somewhere to wait.

This way, you avoid them wandering around your office and possibly getting in the way of those who are working or those that don&#;t have a seat available.

In addition to this, I&#;ll give you another reason &#; it&#;s healthier!

Would it not be better for customers and potential clients to wait in a comfortable environment rather than on a hard chair in a hallway? You can even offer them some refreshments while they wait which will enhance your image as an attentive company.

Choosing the Right Waiting Chair:

The first step when purchasing a new waiting chair is determining which type of office furniture best compliments your current décor and style preferences.

1) Leather: Provides a formal and traditional look that is bold, rich and strong.

2) Fabric: Adds a touch of elegance through sleek design or vibrant prints.

4) Wooden Arms: Provides additional support for the arms as well as a sturdy frame.

5) Carpet Glides: Prevents scratches from occurring on hard floors by providing stability to the chair&#;s feet during use.

6) Size & Dimensions &#; In order to accommodate all visitors comfortably, waiting chairs should measure approximately 26 inches in width with 22 inches of depth (the distance between the seat cushion and back rest). This allows enough space for visitors to get up-and-down easily while seated. The seat should measure 16 inches in width (standard size).

7) Arms: Provide additional support for the arms as well as a sturdy frame. There are 3 main types of arm options to choose from including fixed, removable and adjustable. When determining which style is best for your space, keep in mind that fixed arms can obstruct chairs placed directly behind it so choose an option with removable or adjustable arms if this may be an issue. Fixed arms tend to be heavy and bulky while removable/adjustable models offer flexibility within the layout of any office environment.

8) Soft Cushions: For added comfort during extended periods of sitting, look for seats with soft cushioning that allows the body to rest against the chair&#;s back and seat.

9) Height Adjustability: Look for adjustable chairs that adjust to your preferred height and provide a comfortable position when seated with feet flat on the floor.

10) Air Seating: A style of chair in which a cushion is supported by compressed air rather than foam or webbing.

11) Leather Upholstery: Leather is a popular upholstery choice because it looks great and wears well over time, although it does require some maintenance.

12) Polyurethane Foam Cushioning: This type of foam comes in various levels of firmness depending on preference and application requirements. In general, higher densities equal more comfort while lower density will give you greater flexibility in the chair itself since they are less firm.

13) Foam Back Cushion: Foam back cushions are usually stuffed with a higher density foam to maintain the shape of the cushion while supporting your lower back, pelvis and hips.

If you&#;re on the fence about whether or not to get a waiting chair for your office, hopefully this article has helped to ease some of your concerns and has provided you with the knowledge you need in order to make a decision.
